"They that go down to the sea in ships, and

men see the works of the Lord, and His
wonders in the deep."

Honoring Our Fallen Heroes at Annapolis

THE VIRTUAL NAVY WALL

Sponsored by the United States Navy Veterans Association

"They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn;

At the setting of the sun on America's oceans,
And in the morning rush of America's new dawn,
We Will Remember Them."

Our Virtual Navy Wall lists our Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard  veterans (when the USCG was, or is, attached to the Navy, as it was during the World War I and World War II periods ), America's bravest sons and daughters, who served the Nation, and who are no longer with us, but still are.

May God Hold Them All in the Palm of His Hand.

"Day is done, Gone the sun
From the lake, From the hill, From the sky;
all is well, safely rest; God is nigh."

" A VETERAN'S COURAGE"

by United States Navy Veterans Association
Poet Laureate John Witherspoon

If courage made the measure
as to who was big or small,
then the Veterans we honor
are the tallest of them all.

On
The day that gave no quarter,
cramped and deadly, on ship, air or land,
Hand-to-hand, America's Bravest Sons and Daughters
cast a shadow, tall and grand.

For
In their Patriots' line of duty
was the knowledge bittersweet,
that the enemies of Freedom were constant companions,
on a never ending beat.

O weep,
You Patriots, for the
Ones you cannot see,
Then cease your weeping and rejoice
For They are still here with us like a Tall Oak Tree.

And where They fell on foreign soil or sea
Their Sacred Blood has sanctified that space.
And Liberty stands there with America's Flag,
and She has a Veteran's face.

The Virtual Navy Wall does not purport to be an exhaustive list of every deceased USN , USMC, and USCG member. Even if it were, this Site was dedicated in 2002, and it would be hundreds of years from then before every deceased USN,USMC and World War USCG  member could be researched and listed.

Instead, honorees are honored on the Wall by specific request made to the United States Navy Veterans Association. You can send your request to:

United States Navy Veterans Association
Attn: Virtual Navy Wall
7028 W. Waters Ave. #325
Tampa FL 33634

or, you can provide your honoree's information to us at VirtualNavyWall@NavyVets.org

or, you can add your honoree's information as an entry in the Navy Honorees Guestbook at the bottom of this Page. When we have added your honoree's information on the Wall, we will delete your entry.

Whatever method of contacting us you choose, please follow one of the formats already used on the Wall for listings.

"Are Soldiers Martyrs?"

"...If I am asked what I think concerning the eternal salvation of a brave man who lays down his life in defense of his country's honor and in vindication of violated justice, I do not hesitate to reply that one cannot doubt in the least that God will crown his military valor. Death, accepted in this spirit, will assure the salvation of that man's soul."

- Joseph Cardinal Mercier, who led the Belgian resistance to the German occupation of his country during the First World War

**********

On the PBS-TV Lehrer Report, Memorial Day, 2003, Roger Rosenblatt, a major media editor, spoke somewhat disparangly of the Remembrance of our Veteran Dead as a

'memorialization in order to try to keep their lives going.'

Remembrance of our Veteran Dead is an advocacy for the American mind, for the American spirit, and for American action every day in things we can do as simple as thanking that boy down the street for the three years he spent in the Marine Corps, or tying a yellow ribbon around a tree, or keeping your vehicle's lights on in daylight on Memorial Day and on Veterans' Day, in honor of our Service Men and Women.

Remembrance of our Veteran Dead is American Patriotism incarnate; it is not just thought; it is a call to action just as much as reminding someone to designate a sober driver is.

Roger is wrong.

Our honored dead live among us still, certainly, and they always will. But they also point us forward with the example of both their lives and deaths, to America's future to help humanity, to support Freedom as the natural right of all men and women everywhere, and under any circumstances, and never to deny the cause of the United States in the world.

So, Roger you are wrong. As is anyone who says that Remembrance of America's Veteran Dead is to be minimized. Our Remembrance of them is that, a Remembrance, but it is also a reveille for America, the American dream, and the American future they died for.

Honor lies in service, not in greed, and no higher honor lies than with those who have died for the cause of the United States, the cause of the Freedom of Man.

Over 1.2 million American souls who died in combat since the time of the Revolution say so.

And so do we.

The Virtual Navy Wall is designed as a place for reflection and of special love, not a place of anger, but also as a place of  tribute to the patriotism of the Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps Veterans  listed on it.

"The Wall"

In the early morning hours of December 7, 1941, the first heroine of America's Second World War, the young, newly appointed assistant headmistress of the Armed Forces military dependents' school at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, was holding a Sunday morning meeting to discuss with her teaching staff the upcoming curriculum for the second semester.

There was a loud roar overhead, and everyone ran outside. They gazed skyward in horror as they saw warplanes diving southward, opening fire as they flew. Out of the sky, visible to all who were looking upward that morning, was coming a vicious assault on Americans in the Hawaiian Islands.

Seeing the red sun on the side of the planes, the headmistress knew from her training, these were Japanese planes. And even though she was only a civilian, this slip of a girl knew she wore the cloth of the Nation, and that American honor did not lie in cowering under a bed waiting for bombs to fall. She ran to the armory and broke out one of the old rifles, which she could barely lift. She pointed it at the sky, and fired.

"You'll pay for this," she shouted.

...And so they did.

You can look up her name if you wish, but before she died, a while back, in St. Petersburg, Florida, she told the United States Navy Veterans Association that she "didn't do anything special" and wanted to remain anonymous....And we will honor that request, but we also honor her here on this Wall, along with all the others who dedicated, and dedicate, their lives to the service of the Nation, as opposed to following some other more profitable path they could have chosen in life, and whose names are not known.

On September 12, 2002, the remains of the five unidentified souls, who were killed along with 179 other martyrs at the Pentagon on 9-11-01, were buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Mess Attendant 1st Class Dorie Miller, USN,  bravely manned a machine gun on the deck of the sinking U.S.S. West Virginia on the morning of December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor, pouring fire into the attacking Japanese planes. Dorie was killed in action on board the U.S.S. Liscome Bay on November 24,1943.

Of the American servicemen who served in World War II, over 25% were African-American, a percentage far higher, over double actually, than the ratio of African-Americans to the American population as a whole at the time. Many of these same heroes, all over the age of 82 today, in the case of the World War II generation, still live in poverty on the streets of a bountiful America.

THE FOUR CHAPLAINS

On the evening of February 2, 1943, the U.S.A.T. Dorchester was carrying 902 servicemen, merchant seamen and civilian workers from Newfoundland toward an American base in Greenland 150 miles away. Three Coast Guard cutters were escorting the convoy. Captain of the Dorchester Hans J. Danielsen had ordered the men to sleep in their clothing and keep life jackets on because of German U-boats that had been seen in the area - several ships had already been sunk. Many soldiers and seamen sleeping deep in the ship's hold disregarded the order because of the engine's heat. Others ignored it because the life jackets were uncomfortable.

On February 3, at 12:55 a.m., the ship was torpedoed by  the German submarine U-223. The hit was deadly. with the Dorchester taking water rapidly and sinking, Captain Danielsen gave the order to abandon ship. In less than 27 minutes, the Dorchester would slip beneath the Atlantic's dark and freezing waters. The hit had knocked out power and radio contact with the three escort ships. Two of the three cutters circled the Dorchester rescuing survivors. The third Coast Guard cutter continued on, escorting the remaining two ships to safety. The blast from the torpedo killed scores of our men and seriously wounded many more.

Men jumped from the ship into lifeboats, overcrowding them to the point of capsizing. Through the pandemonium, four courageous Army chaplains brought hope out of despair and light out of the darkness.

Those chaplains were:

and Catholic Chaplain Lt. John P. Washington
Protestant Reformed Chaplain Lt. Clark V. Poling
Methodist Chaplain Lt. George L. Fox
Jewish Chaplain Lt. Alexander D. Goode

The four chaplains quickly tried to calm the frightened men, to tend to the wounded and to guide the disoriented toward safety, preaching courage and faith every inch of the way.

At the darkest moment for many, the chaplains opened a storage locker and began distributing  newly found life jackets.

When there were no more jackets, the four removed theirs and gave them to four frightened young merchant marines.

As the Dorchester sunk beneath the waves, survivors in the boats could see the four chaplains - arms linked and braced against the slanting deck. Their voices could be heard in prayer - Hebrew and English - as the ship went down. Of 902 men aboard, 672 died, leaving 230 survivors. That night these four American ministers serving the cause of the God of all our fathers, Reverend Fox, Rabbi Goode, Reverend Poling and Father Washington, passed life's ultimate test and became an enduring example to all of us of extraordinary faith, courage, patriotism and selflessness.

May God Bless America.
